Why Australia's PhD funding model is unusually simple
Instead of a patchwork of assistantships and named scholarships, Australia runs one national scheme, the Research Training Program, block-granted by the government to every university and then awarded to admitted PhD candidates without a separate application in most cases. If a Group of Eight university - Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, Queensland, Monash, Western Australia, or Adelaide - offers you a PhD place, an RTP award almost always comes with it.
Australian PhDs also run shorter than the US or UK norm. Three to four years is standard, because Australian admissions assume you arrive research-ready, through a master's or an Honours year, rather than building research skills from scratch during the PhD itself.
How PhD funding works in Australia
The RTP has three parts: a Tuition Fee Offset that covers your full international tuition fee, a tax-free stipend paid fortnightly for living costs, and, at many universities, allowances for relocation, thesis costs, and health cover.
The 2026 national stipend benchmark is AUD 37,010 a year, though individual universities pay more: the University of Sydney offers AUD 42,754, Melbourne around AUD 39,500, Queensland AUD 37,500, and Monash AUD 37,145. The rate rises again to AUD 38,310 from January 2027. The stipend is genuinely tax-free for the scholarship's first four years, unlike taxable assistantship income in the US.

Standard entry needs a research master's, or a bachelor's with First Class Honours (Class IIA or above) - Australia's own undergraduate system builds in a research-heavy Honours year that most Indian degrees don't have an equivalent for. A bachelor's plus two or more years of research experience and publications can qualify with the Graduate Research School's approval, but that's the exception, not the rule.
English requirements run higher than the US or Germany: IELTS 7.0 or above, or TOEFL 96+, at most Group of Eight universities. GRE is not a general requirement and mainly surfaces in a handful of business or heavily quantitative programs.
